COMMENTS:
The Mardi Gras Indians are a 150-year
old New Orleans tradition that had its roots in antebellum gang warfare which
evolved into ritual displays of complex hand-beaded costumes and music and
dancing. At its heart it represents the spiritual as well as often political and
military alliance that has existed between blacks and native Americans almost
since the beginning of their meeting in the New World.
